Trellech Village Hall Newsletter – April 2015

Happy Easter to you all.  Mother Nature has been doing a bit of spring cleaning over the last couple of days, ready for the Easter Weekend!  Whatever your plans for the next few days, I hope you have a lovely time – and perhaps see you at Trellech Teas on Friday.  Yes, we’ll be there, with some slightly different goodies on offer – and some colouring in.

New classes are starting this month, plus we’re setting up a Food Co-op.  Dates are set for the Trellech BIG Weekend and we have spring time flowers at Trellech Teas on Friday.

So, read on……..and we hope to see you soon.

Trellech Teas news
We are open tomorrow, Good Friday, so please come along and enjoy all things ‘eggy’.  We’ll also have a big colouring in Easter tablecloth for the young at heart.

We are also very pleased to welcome back Justine Scouller from Far Hill Flowers.  Justine will be bringing along spring flowers to adorn your homes over the coming festivities.  Take a look at her website here.

I’ve totted up our first quarter’s takings and pleased to announce that we raised just over £1,000 taking the total we’ve raised since we started to just over £10,000!  It’s not all about raising money though. Far more important (to me anyway) is the fantastic community focus of the Teas; bringing together friends – old and new, young and not so young (!) – for a sociable, happy end to the working week.

As always, a HUGE ‘thank you’ to everyone who is involved – as a baker, a server or a customer.  Well done to you all – we couldn’t do it without you.

We need you
Are you able to spare a Friday afternoon and/or bake a cake for Trellech Teas once in a while?  We are looking for willing volunteers to help the Teas continue to be the success they are.  If you’d like to join our merry band of Tea Ladies (or Gents!) and wear the prestigious pinny, or simply bake something for us every now and then, please contact Sarah Whiddett on or 01600 860967.

FIDO Dog training
Two new classes for you and your pooch
Helen Atton is running a Follow On FIDO training course on Wednesday evenings for eight weeks. This is an advanced course, ideal for dog owners who want to consolidate their dog’s training and move on to more challenging commands.

There is also a new Training and Socialisation eight week course starting on Thursday 16th April.

For more information and to book on either of these courses, contact Helen on 07974 444082 or on email

Tai Chi
New course starting April 13th
Steve Whiddett is starting a new 12 week Tai Chi class, beginning Monday 13th April 7:00pm – 8:00pm.  The course will be suitable for absolute beginners and the first two sessions will focus on principles, posture and the basic movements in Tai Chi.

For those who have already practiced some Tai Chi you can come to the first two sessions (and you are encouraged to if you can), but if you are unable or prefer not to, you can start at the session on April 27th.

This course will cover about one third of the 24 step Yang style routine, often referred to as the Beijing 24 routine. This routine is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. For those who have already trained with Steve, this course builds on the eight posture routine and all you have learned so far.
The course fee will be £60 for twelve weeks or £50 if starting on the 27th April, payable at the beginning of the course. Once the course has started the group can look at suitable dates for courses to cover the remaining sections of the routine.
For more information and to book, please contact Steve Whiddett on 01600 86096 or email him on

Food Co-op
Starts April 24th
at Trellech Teas
We’re taking orders for our first Food Co-op deliveries on April 24th – which means the first bags will be available to collect on May 1st.

If you’re not familiar with the scheme, it works on an order/pay on a Friday; collect (and order again if you wish) the following Friday.

There will be five types of bags available – Fruit, Vegetables, Mixed (fruit and veg), Salad and Stir Fry.  Bags are just £3.00 each and you can order as many as you want, as often as you want.

You must collect your bags the week after you order them – we can’t deliver to home addresses.  You can send friends to collect if you’re not able to make it to the Teas.

If you’d like more information about the Food Co-op, we have flyers available at the Teas or you can click here for an information brochure.

Trellech Village Hall Newsletter – October 2014

I was standing in the queue in a bank in Monmouth the other day and someone commented on the piece in the local paper about Trellech Teas.  “What a great achievement” they said “and what a lovely community event it is.”  I absolutely agree.  We are very lucky to have not only the Teas but a diary filling up with interesting talks (the next one is tomorrow) and great classes and all in the lovely Village Hall that we’re so lucky to have.  I hope you’re making good use of it and long may it continue.

Are you getting fed up with the traffic speeding through the village?  If so, do join the petition to get something done about it.  More of that below.

After three successful ‘take overs’ of Trellech Teas this year, we’re inviting applications for good causes to benefit next year.  There’s more about it below – but don’t dally, the closing date is next month.

Hope to see you soon.

Love Food, Hate Waste

Burning Issues supper
Friday October 3rd – 7:30pm
Did you know that we throw away 7 million tonnes of food and drink from our homes every year?  And most of it is food that could have been eaten.  Not only is this wasteful on our pockets (total cost is around £12.5 billion pounds) but it’s not good for the environment either.

Joanne Tarling will be delving into what’s behind these numbers – and sharing ways in which we can all reduce the amount of waste we produce.  Visit the website for more information and ideas.

The event is free to attend and includes supper.  Donations are gratefully received.

Apple Day

Friday Oct 24th at Trellech Teas
This year we’re celebrating all things ‘apple’ at Trellech Teas. The cakes will have a distinctly ‘apple’ feel about them and there will be apple related information and fun to be had.  More information will be coming out nearer the time.

If you’d like to get involved, please contact Sue Flower on 01600 860754 or

Traffic petition
Do you find it difficult to drive out of the Village Hall car park?  Do you find it scary simply walking anywhere in the village?  A petition has been started to highlight the issues that many villagers face simply getting around and about – on foot and in our cars.  If you’d like to support this initiative, or find out more, please visit change, org.

Do you want to raise money for your favourite cause?
Three times during this year Trellech Teas has been ‘taken over’ by a local group to help raise funds.  Busy Bodies, St Nicholas’ Church and The Narth WI have all benefitted from this scheme.

It’s been so successful that we’re going to hand the Teas over to four groups next year.  If you’d like your favourite cause to be one of these groups, please apply before November 22nd 2014. Application forms can be downloaded hereor collected from Trellech Teas.

If we end up with more than four good causes, we will put them all to the vote with Trellech Teas’ customers being able to cast a vote each time they visit.  Final decisions will be made by end of December 2014.

Coming up……
November 21st, 6:30pm for 7:00pm start.  A talk and supper with Consultant General Surgeon Brian Stephenson who has used his skills to help patients in Africa.  Tickets can be bought here or at Trellech Teas.

There are plans for a Christmas Market, pencilled in for November 22nd.  If you’d like to take part, please contact

Trellech Trips – a coach trip to Bath Christmas Market is scheduled for December 3rd.  Keep the date in your diary – more information to follow.

Trellech Village Hall Newsletter – September 2014

Schools are back and life gets back to some sort of semblance of ‘normality’.  Even for those of us without school age children at home, it seems that September heralds a new start. It with great sadness I have to tell you that John Windridge died on Sunday afternoon.  John was instrumental in shaping the Village Hall as The Babington Centre as we all know it now.  His funeral is on September 15th – more of that below.

We have a lot happening this month.  New Tai Chi classes, a second birthday party and a speaker who’s faced some amazing challenges on two, very skinny wheels!  So, grab a cuppa and take a few minutes to find out what’s happening this month.
