About the Race
The Trellech Beacon Dash was a brand new c.10km multi-terrain running race for 2017. Brought to you by Spirit of Monmouth Running Club with the Babington Centre (aka Trellech Village Hall), a registered charity.

The 2017 race was held at 11am on Sunday October 22nd and 142 runners took part. Held the day after “Storm Brian” hit the UK, lots of the returning runners had muddy legs!

When we say multi-terrain, we aren’t kidding! There is tarmac, forestry track, woodland trails and farmland. Trail shoes are strongly recommended as parts of the course could potentially be very muddy and waterlogged.Just like the Kymin Dash, the race starts on a hill! Much of the first two miles is uphill (though not as steep as the Kymin). The good news is that once you have reached the Trellech Beacon, the rest of the race is fairly flat or downhill. There will be a separate prize for the first man and lady to reach the Beacon – plus the glory of being crowned “King” or “Queen” of the Beacon. The race has about 400ft of ascent in total.

The other advantage of the uphill climb at the beginning is that (in good weather), there are lots of far-reaching views to enjoy. We don’t think there are many running races with views of the Brecon Beacons, the Malvern Hills, Monmouthshire AND the Wye Valley – even the Severn Bridge can be seen from the route! And of course the woodlands of Monmouthshire, through which the route runs, are stunning in late October.

There will be lots of marshals to help guide runners through the woodland and sweeper runners to ensure no-one is left behind. There will be a water station at approx 4 miles.

For all race participants, there will be refreshments at the Babington Centre after the race plus a little memento of the race. There will be prizes for King and Queen of the Beacon, Overall winners and age category winners.

If you have any questions at all about the race, you can message us on Facebook or via our website contact form.

What’s in store at Trellech Teas?

(Opens every Friday from 2pm to 4.30pm)

Trellech Teas has continued to open its doors all summer and what a lovely one it was.

Many cups of refreshing tea and slices of seasonal cake were served and the Trellech Tea ladies would like to thank all our customers for their continued support.

In fact, as we approach the new season, we will be celebrating our 6th anniversary, so please note Friday 28th September in your diaries and come along and join us.

There is another very good cause being championed this day also; The Macmillan Fund are holding their annual coffee morning. So please keep room for a little piece of cake in the afternoon and we will donate our takings for that day to this very worthwhile cause.

The next ‘Take over Teas’ is on Friday 19th October, when funds raised that day will help support the work of our local bellringers. More about this in our next edition.

We are currently working on our autumn programme and will keep you informed of any events, so for the meantime, keep Friday afternoons free if you can and come and join us in the Village Hall for refreshment and lively chat and hopefully a giggle. All ages welcome. We have a range of speciality teas and coffees, drinks for the children and a gluten free cake and quiche is always available.

Don’t forget that if you cannot stay, our takeaway boxes allow you to take cake (and quiche) away to family, friends and colleagues.

Last but not least, if anyone else out there would like to join our band of happy helpers, either as bakers or helpers, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Best wishes,

Jean and Margaret.

Trellech Teas warming up for Summer

(Trellech Teas opens every Friday at the Babington from 2pm to 4.30pm)

We continue to welcome all at Trellech Teas, as we hopefully move towards warmer weather.

This month, we are proud to say that as we run as a not for profit organisation, we are able to make three substantial donations from last year’s takings. This is due of course to our customers and volunteer helpers and bakers, without whom we would not be able to run.

The ‘good causes’ identified this year are; Solas, who provide a broad range of services for vulnerable people, those that are homeless or at risk of homelessness locally; a charity in Cambodia supporting children and girls education and our own village hall in Trellech, to be put towards a new notice board to replace the one currently in use outside the Babington Centre.

We have two ‘takeover teas’ coming up soon. This is an opportunity for local organisations to hire the hall and raise money for their own causes. 27th April will be the turn of the Babington Trust to organise the afternoon and 18th May will be the turn of ‘Home Start’ who provide help and support for families in the locality. Please come along and take refreshment in the usual way, in the knowledge that you are contributing to the community at the same time.

For now, enjoy a cup of tea, coffee and a delicious slice of cake or quiche in the warmth of the hall. Don’t forget we do a range of speciality teas and cafetiere coffees along with a gluten free cake every week.  The 3 smaller pieces of cake for £2.50 is always a popular option and you can always ‘takeaway’ with our purpose built cake boxes.

Hope to see you soon and don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like to help or bake!

Best wishes,

Jean Hughes
