Trellech Village Hall Newsletter – September 2014

Schools are back and life gets back to some sort of semblance of ‘normality’.  Even for those of us without school age children at home, it seems that September heralds a new start. It with great sadness I have to tell you that John Windridge died on Sunday afternoon.  John was instrumental in shaping the Village Hall as The Babington Centre as we all know it now.  His funeral is on September 15th – more of that below.

We have a lot happening this month.  New Tai Chi classes, a second birthday party and a speaker who’s faced some amazing challenges on two, very skinny wheels!  So, grab a cuppa and take a few minutes to find out what’s happening this month.

Hope to see you soon.

Bargain time for all you ladies.  One person’s clutter is another’s much-loved item so if you’d like to pick up a bargain you must come to Trellech Teas on September 12th.You know that bath lotion that you had for Christmas last year, and that hand creme you thought you’d love but you didn’t?  And, what about that foundation that just didn’t suit you?  All things that are too good to throw away but, if you’re honest, you’ll never use.  Well, here’s your chance to clear your shelves!

Bring along all your unused, unloved but still in good condition lotions, potions and make-up and we’ll find a good home for them.  We’ll sell them on the day (a chance for you to buy some great things at a very good price) and anything left over at the end of the event can either be collected by you or we will donate to a worthy, charitable cause.
You will receive 50% of the sale price, Trellech Teas will get the rest.  If you fancy bringing things along please make sure you drop them off with us this week or by 2:30pm next week at the latest.

Many of you will remember John and the work he did to help The Babington Centre remain a part of Trellech Village life.  He worked tirelessly for many years making sure the Centre was not only preserved for future generations of the village but also rennovated so it was a useful building.  We are forever grateful for the work he and his colleagues did for the Centre.John’s funeral is on Monday September 15th in St Nicholas Church at 3:00pm and afterwards at The Village Hall.  Family flowers only.  Donations to Crossroads and The Babington Centre are being received by Funeral Directors David Stockwell & Co, Monmouth.  Their telephone number is 01600 712750.

Trellech BIG Weekend
This year was the third BIG Weekend (if you count the Jubilee weekend in 2012 as year 1).  We packed a lot into the three days and I hope you were able to attend at least something in that time.

We kicked off with Trellech Teas and the Flower Festival in St Nicholas Church and finished with a very well attended Songs of Praise family service and afternoon tea, also at the Church.  Due to the fantastic fund raising that has been going on all year via Trellech Teas (more of that below) we had enough money to not only pay for much better marketing (flyers, posters, banners etc) but also to subsidise events so they were either free or at a nominal cost.

Thanks to all the organisers who spent many months getting everything sorted and to everyone who took part.

Next year we’ll be doing it all again – July 17-19.  If you’d like to make any suggestions and/or get involved in planning please let me know (

Read a full report and have a look at some of the pictures on the BIG Weekend

‘The Road to Nowhere’

A very personal view of his adventures on the Trans-Amazonian Highway

Robert Penn is an author, journalist, TV presenter, cyclist and wannabe woodsman. He’s ridden a bicycle most days of his adult life, in over forty countries on five continents. In his late-twenties, he cycled round the world. His book, ‘It’s All About the Bike: the Pursuit of Happiness on Two Wheels’ was a Sunday Times bestseller and has been translated into 11 languages.

In 2012, Rob presented ‘Tales from the Wild Wood’, a six-part series for BBC4 about British Woodlands which explored the great British love affair with trees; and is the author of ‘The Man Who Cut Down Trees’ which is to be published in 2015.

In September 2013, he cycled the Trans-Amazonian Highway with Freddie Flintoff, to make a documentary series for Sky TV. The pair cycled 500 miles while learning about the devastating effects of deforestation. Flintoff’s Road to Nowhere aired on Sky1 in April 2014.

“The Amazon was never on my bucket list of places to go for a bike ride. The roads are poorly maintained, pounded by logging lorries and often mind-numbingly straight; the heat and humidity are debilitating; the scenery hardly changes for some two million square miles; and there are 196 species of snake. However, the chance to make a TV documentary about the rainforest with one of my cricketing heroes, Freddie Flintoff, was more than I could resist.”   Rob Penn
